How to clean cloudy vintage glass and decanters

Cloudy glass is either a film on the surface, which comes off, or etching from years in the dishwasher, which doesn't. Here's how to tell and what to do.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Test the cloudiness

Wet the cloudy area or wipe a little mineral oil on it. If it clears while wet and comes back when dry, it's probably etching, which is permanent.

  2. Step 2: Soak off mineral film

For hard water film, soak the glass in warm white vinegar for a few hours, then wash in soapy water.

  3. Step 3: Decanters and vases

Drop in two denture tablets with warm water and leave overnight. For stubborn rings, add a handful of rice with some vinegar and swirl so the rice scrubs the inside.

  4. Step 4: Dry properly

Rinse with hot water and dry upside down on a rack so air can get in. A rolled up paper towel inside a decanter soaks up the last drops.

  5. Step 5: Be honest about etching

Etched or sick glass can only be fixed by professional polishing. Don't oil it to hide it when selling. Describe it as cloudy in your listing.
