How to get musty smells out of vintage clothing and linen

That op shop smell is usually old dust, damp and mould spores. Most of it comes out with air, sun and a few household basics.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Air it

Hang the piece outside in the shade on a breezy day. A day of fresh air fixes more than you'd think. Strong sun fades colours, so avoid it for dyed fabrics.

  2. Step 2: Spray it

Lightly mist the inside with vodka or a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. Both evaporate and take smells with them. Let it dry outdoors.

  3. Step 3: Use baking soda

For pieces you can't wash, put them in a large bag with an open bowl of baking soda or activated charcoal. Seal it and leave for a few days.

  4. Step 4: Wash if you can

For washable cotton and linen, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse and dry outdoors.

  5. Step 5: Store dry

Keep clothes in breathable cotton bags in a dry spot. Damp wardrobes bring the smell straight back.
