How to sell vintage lamps and appliances safely
Vintage lamps, heaters, toasters and radios sell well, but anything that plugs in has to be safe. Here's how to list electrical finds honestly and stay on the right side of the rules.

Step by step
Step 1: Decide how to sell it
There are two honest options: get it checked and tested so it can be sold as working, or sell it as display only or for parts.
Step 2: Get it tested
A test and tag service or electrician can check most items to the AS/NZS 3760 standard for a modest fee. Keep the certificate and photograph the tag.
Step 3: Display only items
If it isn't tested, say so in the title and description, for example: Untested, sold for display or restoration only. Some sellers also cut off the plug to make it clear.
Step 4: Watch for red flags
Old heaters, toasters and hair dryers can contain asbestos. Cloth or rubber cords, two pin plugs and burn marks mean it needs work. Mention these in your listing.
Step 5: Show the details
Photograph the cord, plug, label and any wear. Buyers trust listings that show everything.
