A clever vintage hand carved African hardwood side table, the type made in East Africa from around the 1960s and 70s.
The base is the clever part: three interlocking legs, cut so they slot through each other with no glue, nails or screws, and fold flat in seconds. The lift-off round top is reversible. One side is carved with five fish swimming around a flower medallion. Flip it over and it's a mancala game board with rows of pits and a store at each end, for the traditional African stone-counting game (bao or oware).
Approx 35cm across the top and 46cm high. Good used condition with an even dark patina, a few light scuffs and a small paint fleck on the edge of the game side. Solid and stable.
A great conversation piece as a plant stand, side table or games table. Pick up Hamilton.
