Referral terms
The plain-English rules for refer and earn. Updated 3 November 2026. The short version is on the refer and earn page.
1. Who can join
- Any Junkie member with an account in good standing can refer people. You need to be 18 or over to be paid.
- To be paid you need a Stripe payouts account in your name (set up from your referral dashboard). Your earnings add up in the meantime.
2. How referrals are counted
- Your links never expire. When someone clicks one, we store your code in a cookie on their device. The cookie is refreshed every time they visit, so it lasts for as long as they keep coming back and don't clear it.
- The first referral link someone clicks is the one that counts. Clicking someone else's link later doesn't change it.
- When they create an account, the referral is saved on their account, and from then on it is permanent. An account can only be linked to a referrer within 30 days of signing up.
- If someone joins with the email address you invited from your dashboard, they're linked to you even if they never clicked your link.
- Each account has one referrer. We can't move a referral between members.
3. What you earn
- You earn 50% of Junkie's margin on every account you referred, for as long as both accounts are open and the programme runs.
- Junkie's margin is the money Junkie keeps from that account: shop plans, buyer protection fees, listing boosts, listing credits, valuations and hire fees, less GST, the card and Stripe fees we pay on that payment, and the AI costs of the listings that account makes.
- Money a seller receives for something they sold is theirs, not Junkie's, so it never counts.
- On a sale through Junkie checkout, the buyer protection fee is shared: the buyer's referrer and the seller's referrer each earn on half of the margin. If you referred both, you earn on all of it.
- AI costs are taken off once a month, only against what you earned from that same account that month. They never take your earnings below zero, so you never owe us money.
- Every amount, with the margin it came from, is on your dashboard and in your downloadable statement.
4. Getting paid
- Earnings are held for 30 days, which covers most refunds and chargebacks, then become payable.
- Early each month we pay everything payable to your bank through Stripe, if it adds up to $20.00 or more. Smaller amounts roll over to the next month.
- Payouts over $500.00 are checked by a person before they go out, which can add a few days.
- We pay in New Zealand dollars to a New Zealand bank account.
5. Refunds and chargebacks
- If a payment you earned from is refunded or disputed, your share of it is cancelled, or taken off your next payout if it has already been paid.
- If a dispute is later settled in Junkie's favour, email hello@junkie.nz and we'll put it back.
6. The rules
- No referring yourself, your other accounts, or accounts you control. That includes signing up from your own phone, computer, home network or card.
- Only send invites and messages to people you know who'd be happy to hear from you. Don't spam, buy email lists, post your link in groups that don't allow it, or message strangers. New Zealand's Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act applies to you too.
- Be honest. Tell people it's your referral link. Don't make claims about Junkie that aren't true, promise things we don't offer, or pretend to be Junkie.
- Don't bid on "Junkie" or similar words in search ads, or make websites, pages or accounts that look like they're ours.
- No cash-back or payments to people for signing up through your link.
7. Checks and holds
- We check referrals for things like a shared device, network, email address or card. If something looks off, we hold that referral's earnings while a person looks into it. Most holds clear in a few days.
- If we find a referral breaks these rules, it earns nothing, and we can take back anything already paid from it. If you break them on purpose, we can close your referral account and keep any unpaid earnings from the referrals involved.
8. Tax
- Referral earnings are income. You're responsible for telling Inland Revenue about them and paying any tax. Your downloadable statement has everything you need.
- If you're registered for GST, add your GST number on your dashboard. The amounts we pay you include any GST.
- We don't deduct tax from your earnings.
9. Changes
- We may change the share, the rules or the payout schedule, or end the programme. We'll give you at least 30 days' notice by email first, and 90 days if we end it. Anything you earned before a change is paid on the old terms.
- These terms are part of Junkie's terms of use and are governed by New Zealand law. Junkie is run by Global Support Limited, New Zealand. Questions: hello@junkie.nz.
