How to wake up a barn find car or motorbike safely

A car, motorbike or tractor that has sat for years needs care before you try to start it. Rushing can wreck an engine that would otherwise run.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Don't turn the key yet

Trying to start a seized or dry engine can break things. Take your time.

  2. Step 2: Drain the old fuel

Stale petrol turns to varnish. Drain the tank and carburettor and check for rust or gunk in the tank.

  3. Step 3: Free the engine

Remove the spark plugs, squirt a little penetrating oil or engine oil into each cylinder and leave it overnight. Then turn the engine by hand with a spanner on the crank pulley. If it won't turn, stop and get advice.

  4. Step 4: Fresh oil and battery

Change the oil and filter, fit a fresh battery and check the coolant and hoses.

  5. Step 5: Try to start it

With fresh fuel and plugs, crank it briefly. If it runs, let it idle and watch for leaks, smoke and warning lights.

  6. Step 6: Brakes before driving

Brake fluid absorbs water and seals perish. Overhaul the brakes before you drive it anywhere.

  7. Step 7: Getting it road legal

It'll need a Warrant or Certificate of Fitness, and if it's been off the register it may need recertification. Ask a testing station what your vehicle needs. Car clubs are a great help.
