How to revive faded paint on a vintage car or tractor

Chalky, faded paint on old cars, motorbikes and Fergie tractors often hides a good finish underneath. Cutting and polishing can bring back the shine while keeping its honest patina.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Wash it well

Wash the whole vehicle top down and dry it with microfibre towels.

  2. Step 2: Clay it

Use a clay bar with lubricant to lift tar and grit from the paint. The surface should feel smooth as glass.

  3. Step 3: Test a small area

Mask off a small panel and try polish first, then cutting compound if needed. Use the gentlest thing that works.

  4. Step 4: Cut and polish

Work small sections at a time. Keep away from edges and body lines, where the paint is thinnest and easy to go through.

  5. Step 5: Leave the patina

Some scratches and fading are part of the vehicle's history. Many buyers prefer honest original paint to a fresh respray.

  6. Step 6: Protect it

Finish with a good coat of wax and keep it under cover.
